Instrumental Variable Models for Discrete Outcomes

چکیده

Single equation instrumental variable models for discrete outcomes are shown to be set not point identifying for the structural functions that deliver the values of the discrete outcome. Identi…ed sets are derived for a general nonparametric model and sharp set identi…cation is demonstrated. Point identi…cation is typically not achieved by imposing parametric restrictions. The extent of an identi…ed set varies with the strength and support of instruments and typically shrinks as the support of a discrete outcome grows. The paper extends the analysis of structural quantile functions with endogenous arguments to cases in which there are discrete outcomes. Keywords: Partial identi…cation, Nonparametric methods, Nonadditive models, Discrete distributions, Ordered choice, Endogeneity, Instrumental variables, Structural quantile functions, Incomplete models. JEL Codes: C10, C14, C50, C51.

Generalized instrumental variable models

The ability to allow for flexible forms of unobserved heterogeneity is an essential ingredient in modern microeconometrics. In this paper we extend the application of instrumental variable (IV) methods to a wide class of problems in which multiple values of unobservable variables can be associated with particular combinations of observed endogenous and exogenous variables. In our Generalized In...

Simultaneous equations models for discrete outcomes: coherence, completeness, and identication

This paper studies simultaneous equations models for two or more discrete outcomes. The models allow latent variables to be high dimensional and require latent variables and covariates to be independently distributed. The models may be incoherent, delivering no values of the outcomes at certain values of the latent variables and covariates. The models may be incomplete, delivering more than one...

Sharp identified sets for discrete variable IV models

Instrumental variable models for discrete outcomes are set, not point, identifying. The paper characterises identi…ed sets of structural functions when endogenous variables are discrete. Identi…ed sets are unions of large numbers of convex sets and may not be convex nor even connected. Each of the component sets is a projection of a convex set that resides in a much higher dimensional space ont...

Endogeneity and Discrete Outcomes

This paper studies models for discrete outcomes which permit explanatory variables to be endogenous. In these models there is a single nonadditive latent variate which is restricted to be locally independent of instruments. The models are incomplete; they are silent about the nature of dependence between the latent variate and the endogenous variable and the role of the instrument in this relat...
